What AB 831 covers
The law defines an online sweepstakes game as a game, contest, or promotion offered through the internet that uses a dual-currency system, awards prizes based on chance, and simulates casino-style gambling. The definition includes games such as slots, video poker, table games, lottery games, bingo, and sports wagering.
AB 831 makes it unlawful to operate or conduct a covered game in California. It also covers anyone who knowingly supports the operation, conduct, or promotion of those games. That is why this page does not contain casino signup buttons or affiliate links.
What the law does not cover
AB 831 does not ban every sweepstakes promotion. Its exclusions include limited or occasional promotional sweepstakes connected to the sale of consumer products or services. A supermarket giveaway and a dual-currency casino-style website are not treated as the same type of promotion.
